“Power Up” Bible Journaling Process

img_9658‘Tis the season for Vacation Bible School!  At my church, we happen to call VBS by the name “Summer Spectacular,” and like many churches around the country, we host hundreds of preschoolers and grade schoolers for a week long camp focused on how we can connect and build our relationship with God.  It is a super fun (and exhausting!) week, and also extremely rewarding!  For the past 3 years, I have volunteered to co-organize the Large Group Rallies every day and have served as the host for those rallies.  I wanted to document this fun event in my Bible, so I turned to 2 Peter 1:3a…

“God’s power gives us everything we need to lead a godly life.” -2 Peter 1:3a

This was the theme verse for the week, and so it was on my heart to journal it!  The theme for the week focused around retro video games, so my page started with a fun stencil from Art Anthology that reminded me of the tubes in Mario World.  I had the opportunity to utilize “Pixie Spray”, a brand new product that I picked up at the Stamp & Scrapbook Expo a couple of weeks ago.  I can not recommend it enough!  A light spray keeps your stencil in place and creates crisp lines, even when blending.  It was fabulous!

img_9667Using a variety of Distress Oxide inks in rainbow colors, I laid down a colorful background of “pipes”.  After that, I used a variety of stamps to add the title “Power Up, Summer Spectacular 2019”.  I love mixing and matching different alphas in my titles to add another level of interest!

I knew I wanted to use some die-cuts to cover up the large 2 Peter title that is at the beginning of this book of the Bible.  In order to stick with the video game theme, I searched online for “Mario coloring pages”.  This led me to several key pictures that I sized down and printed using Microsoft Word.  Once I had the pictures printed onto standard printer paper, I used the same Distress Oxide inks to blend a variety of colors on the page.  Such a fun effect!  I fussy cut out the pieces and placed them around the page, effectively covering up the large book title.

img_9659The last few steps involved choosing a few faith based word-fetti pieces to sprinkle around the page.  Then, I outlined those pieces with my Micron black pen to set them off and also added a scribbled border around the entire page.  The very last step was adding the words “Holy Spirit, You are welcome here!”  So fitting for a week spent working with grade schoolers!

Summer Spectacular continues to be one of the most exhausting weeks of the entire year, but also one of the most rewarding.  Do you or your kids participate in VBS during the summer?  What themes and verses did you cover this year?  Let me know in the comments below!
