The “Adorned” devotional from By the Well 4 God is inspiring me to look at myself in a whole new light. Often times, mom-life has me feeling tired, worn down, and not at all beautiful. Daily life can feel hard and mundane, nothing like the beautiful jewels in the crowns of royalty. But, what this devotional is showing me is that God views me as a gorgeous jewel that deserves to be treasured. In Day 8 of the devotional, the author has us reflecting on our role as peace-keeper in our family. You can check out my process for this entry on my YouTube channel:
This entry is in 1 Peter 3:4-6…
“Don’t let your beauty consist of outward things like elaborate hairstyles and wearing gold jewelry, but rather what is inside the heart – the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. For in the past, the holy women who put their hope in God also adorned themselves in this way, submitting to their own husbands, just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You have become her children when you do what is good and do not fear intimidation.”
To me, this has always been a tough few verse to understand, mostly because of the negative connotation that the word “submit” carries in our culture today. However, upon further reflection, submitting in this case is not losing power, but instead providing a necessary calm in a situation. My role as mom involves organizing our family, creating an environment where we can thrive. That is holy work. I don’t have to adorn myself with outer jewelry and ornaments to glisten in God’s eyes. He is proud of the work I am doing, the effort that I make to create a peaceful and calm environment for my family. There are so many things that are out of our control, but the one thing that is in my control is my reaction to the chaos. And the way I react hopefully reflects God’s love!
The basis of this entry was the peacock die-cut piece sent to the first 100 customers to pre-order the “Adorned” kit from By the Well 4 God. It came in a bright white cardstock that I used Distress Oxide Inks to color. I blended the ink on a scrap piece of paper and sprayed it with a gold shimmer spray to add some more glitter to the piece.
Metallic watercolors and gold shard glitter formed the background of the page. I love the soft shimmer of the metallic watercolor contrasted with the boldness of the gold shard glitter. The gold shards adhered to the Nuvo Crystal Drops in clear that I sprinkled throughout the page. I also added some second generation stamping in three places around the page using the “Tales of Beauty” stamp set available at BTW4G. Second generation stamping involves inking the stamp and then stamping it off on a spare piece of paper before stamping it on your entry. This gives a softer, more subtle look to the stamping, which was perfect for the background of this page.
After I adhered the inked up peacock onto the page with liquid adhesive, and added a few rhinestones to bring even more sparkle to the layout. A beautiful, iridescent rhinestone worked perfectly for the eye of the peacock! I added the title of the page with a mixture of alpha tiles and clear alphas that coordinate with the kit. After adding the tab and a little journaling, the layout was done!
How are you enjoying this kit so far? Any favorite techniques for adding shimmer to a page? Let me know in the comments below!
