As I jumped into Day 4 of “When God Asks a Question” from By the Well 4 God, I am reminded of how much I love the story of Jacob wrestling with God that is told in Genesis 32. I have always connected with this story because there are times when I feel like wrestling with God too! I think we probably all have times when we don’t understand God’s plan, or we question what is happening in the world around us. We wrestle with our faith because our faith is ever-growing and evolving. Did God disown Jacob for his struggling? No! He renamed him, reminding him that he is a child of God, a chosen person that God has magnificent plans for. The same applies to all of us!
I was super excited to try a new process in this particular Bible journal entry. By the Well 4 God offered a new stamp set this month that was specifically intended for layering. I have never tried a layering stamp set before, and really loved the end result! The basics of using this particular stamp set involves stamping solid color images down on your project first, then stamping over the top of them with an outline stamp. This creates dimension and allows you to stamp beautifully intricate and layered images.
The other main technique I used on this particular page is known as “masking”. This is a process to create dimension on your page by having some images in the foreground and some in the background. The tricky part of planning an entry with masking is remembering that the images you intend to be in the foreground are actually stamped first. In this case, that meant that all of my colored florals needed to be stamped down first. I then stamped them on a spare piece of paper and trimmed out one of each floral. After laying these fussy cut pieces over top of the florals on my page, I stamped black and white florals over the top of the masking pieces. Once the fussy cut images are removed, this creates the illusion that the black and white florals were behind the colored florals. So beautiful!
The finishing touch to this stamp-happy page came from the “Simon” alpha stamp set. This is a gorgeous new and LARGE alpha available at By the Well 4 God. The larger size of these alpha stamps allow them to make a big impact on the page. I used them to stamp out my page title, “Re-named”, and then used clear alpha stickers to add the subtitle. A few paint splatters, and then this page was done!
What are some of your favorite stamping techniques? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below!
