Create Unique Art Journal Process

It is so hard to write out the process of an art journal entry! Art journaling is so organic and truly has a mind of its own. My pages rarely end up any where close to the vision I had in my head when I started. Especially in my Dina Wakley Media Journal – that art journal truly takes on a personality and direction of its own!

I started out this process with Distress Oxide sprays. They are such a fabulous way to get a lot of color down on the page in a quick way. And, as a plus, the denim half of this spread actually took the Distress Oxide sprays pretty well. The different material for all of the pages in this art journal continues to be one of the biggest challenges!

I also knew that I wanted to use a few paper pieces that I had torn out of a recent “Real Simple” magazine. That magazine is a fabulous resource for all kinds of artsy and fun images. Definitely one of my go-to magazines for that purpose! The pictures I chose reminded me of my craft room because of their gorgeous colors. My craft room is most certainly my happy place, the place where I feel the most inspired. Some may find the colors I use in my space overwhelming, but they really speak to me and lift my spirits on a daily basis.

Once I had basic elements for the page, I really focused on texture. I added texture by using acrylic paint through stencils in a tone on tone fashion. The paint brush pictures that I cut out allowed me to create some horizontal movement across the page which I ended up liking a great deal. I even highlighted that with some bold black and white stripes as the entry evolved.

This was a pretty interesting entry for me. Definitely in my typical style of using all the color, but the texture really called to me as well. I hope that you are finding opportunities to get creative this summer!

Keep it creative,
