A few weeks ago, I was flipping back through one of my older planners.
There were crossed-out appointments everywhere. Sticky notes were tucked between the pages. Some weeks were beautifully decorated, while others had little more than a few hurried notes scribbled in the margins. There were coffee stains, pen marks, and more than a few places where I'd completely changed my plans halfway through the week.
A younger version of me might have looked at those pages and thought they were messy.
Now I look at them and see a life that was actually lived.
Social media has given us so much beautiful planner inspiration over the years, and I genuinely love seeing the creativity people bring to their pages. But I also worry that sometimes we start believing our planners are supposed to look perfect all the time.
Mine certainly doesn't.
Some weeks I have time to decorate every page. Other weeks I'm lucky if I remember to write down my appointments before Tuesday.
Both weeks are successful.
Because the purpose of my planner isn't to become a work of art. It's to support my real life.
As someone who designs planner inserts for a living, I know that might sound funny. You'd think I'd have the most beautiful planner all the time. The truth is, my planner often looks like it's been through battle. That's because it goes everywhere with me. It's opened and closed dozens of times each day. Plans change. Tasks move. Ideas get scribbled in the margins. Things get crossed out.
That's exactly what it's supposed to do.
I've stopped measuring the success of my planner by how pretty it looks and started measuring it by one simple question: Did it help me live this week a little more intentionally?
If the answer is yes, then it did its job.
That's also why I love my weekly Sunday Reset. Every Sunday gives me an opportunity to look back without judgment and look ahead with fresh perspective. I don't spend time criticizing everything that didn't happen. Instead, I ask myself what still matters, what can wait, and what needs my attention this week.
It's a gentle rhythm instead of a harsh reset button.
That mindset has probably been one of the biggest gifts planning has given me.
Life changes constantly. Kids get sick. Meetings get moved. Inspiration strikes unexpectedly. Sometimes the week you carefully planned on Sunday looks completely different by Wednesday afternoon.
That's not failure.
That's life.
When I created the Sunday Reset System, I wasn't trying to design something that only works during perfect weeks. I wanted a collection of planner pages that could flex with real life. Some weeks you'll lean heavily on the meal planner because everything feels hectic. Other weeks you'll spend more time in the project planner because you're excited about a creative idea. Sometimes your daily journaling pages become the most important part of the week because you simply need a place to slow down and process everything that's happening.
There isn't a right way to use the system.
There isn't a perfect way to plan.
There is only the way that supports your life.
So if you've been waiting for permission to cross something out, skip a week, move a task, or leave a page undecorated, consider this your permission slip.
Use your planner.
Wear it out.
Fill it with memories, mistakes, ideas, grocery lists, dreams, and crossed-out plans.
Because someday you'll flip back through those pages, and instead of seeing imperfections, you'll see the beautiful story of a life that was fully lived.
Keep it creative,
Elisa, The Scrappy Wife
