The Mental Load No One Talks About (And How My Planner Helps)

The Mental Load No One Talks About (And How My Planner Helps)

Last week I wrote about why I've stopped chasing fresh starts and started embracing weekly resets instead. That shift has made a huge difference in my life, but the more I've thought about it, the more I've realized why those resets matter so much.

It's not because my schedule is especially complicated.

It's because my brain is.

As moms, I don't think we talk enough about the mental load we carry every day. It's the constant running list in the back of your mind that never seems to quiet down. Did someone sign the permission slip? Are we almost out of milk? When is that dentist appointment? I need to answer that email. I should order a birthday gift. I forgot to switch the laundry. I really need to film that video. What are we eating for dinner?

None of those thoughts are particularly overwhelming on their own. The problem is that they all show up at once.

Sometimes I'll sit down to design a new planner insert or work on a Bible journaling page, and instead of thinking about colors or creativity, my mind immediately starts reminding me of fifteen other things I haven't done yet. Before I know it, I've gotten up three different times because I remembered something else that couldn't possibly wait.

Sound familiar?

For a long time, I assumed that was just adulthood. I figured everyone walked around with a hundred browser tabs open in their brain all the time. Maybe that's true to some extent, but I've also learned that I don't have to carry all of those thoughts around by myself.

That's where my planner has become so much more than a calendar.

People often think planning is all about scheduling appointments. Of course my planner helps me keep track of dates and deadlines, but that's honestly one of its least important jobs. What it really gives me is somewhere to put all the things my brain is trying to hold onto.

When I write something down, I don't have to keep rehearsing it in my mind so I won't forget it. My planner remembers it for me.

Every Sunday, I spend a little time getting everything out of my head and onto paper. I review the upcoming week, make note of appointments, think through work projects, sketch out a meal plan, and write down anything that's been bouncing around in my mind. Sometimes I even jot down random ideas that have nothing to do with the week ahead simply because I know I'll keep thinking about them until I get them out.

It's amazing how much lighter I feel afterward.

I've realized that my Sunday Reset isn't really about organizing my planner. It's about organizing my thoughts.

As a small business owner, this has become especially important. My work depends on creativity. I need space to think, dream, solve problems, and create. But creativity doesn't usually disappear because I'm uninspired. It disappears because my mind is cluttered.

When I haven't taken the time to slow down and process everything else that's demanding my attention, it's almost impossible to create from a place of joy. Instead, I spend the whole afternoon feeling distracted.

That's one of the reasons I built my Sunday Reset System the way I did. I wanted each piece to solve a different kind of mental clutter. My monthly planner gives me the big picture so I'm not constantly wondering what's coming next. My weekly dashboard helps me focus on what actually matters this week instead of trying to do everything at once. My meal planner eliminates one more daily decision, and my project planner keeps creative ideas from getting lost the moment they pop into my head.

None of those pages are complicated. They're simply tools that help me stop carrying everything in my brain.

I don't think any planner can eliminate the mental load of motherhood or running a business. There will always be responsibilities to manage and unexpected things that come up.

But I do think we can make that load a little lighter.

For me, that's exactly what my Sunday Reset has become. It's not another task to check off my list. It's the thing that helps me walk into Monday feeling like my brain can finally take a deep breath.

And honestly, that's a gift I think every one of us deserves.

Keep it creative,
