Simple Creative Time

Art journaling is one of my favorite outlets, mostly because there are no rules. It is definitely a “you do you” kind of creative endeavor and is perfect for all levels of artists and crafters. But, I have recently found myself comparing my artwork to some of the gorgeous inspiration I have seen online, and it falls short. Whenever I start to feel down on myself, I try to shift my perspective. I am not a trained artist. I have never taken an art class outside of middle school art. I create for fun, and it is okay that my pages are simple. Take a breath and focus on the process, not the product!

There is a fine line between looking to others for inspiration and allowing yourself to be intimidated by the other great artwork you find. I am working to really appreciate and honor other artwork without knocking my own. We are all on our own path and have our own style. It’s a process, and the journey is different for each of us!

The intent for this page was to stick to a single page layout. It has been a long time since I’ve stuck to a single page, and I did find it challenging! Generally, I start with an inspiration piece or technique. This entry was inspired by a hand drawn coffee mug that I cut from a magazine…so beautiful!

As I began working on the entry, I quickly came across a technique that I fell in love with. Using the rubber Dina Wakley media tools, I made small lines and impressions in the acrylic paint that I laid down for the background. This technique allowed me to incorporate bright accents without being overwhelming the page. I ended up primarily sticking to that motif for the entire page.

In the end, this page was super simple. A few acrylic paint pens, some simple lettering, and Nuvo drops finished up the page. The page is certainly nothing to frame, but it was a really enjoyable and simple process for me. These days, it isn’t the final product that is the accomplishment, but simply making time for myself to get creative.

Keep it creative,
