“Super Summer” Traveler’s Notebook Process

img_2309Sometimes, even the most complicated-looking spreads are actually pretty simple to put together.  That was the case with my latest traveler’s notebook spread.  The first goal was to document a sweet picture of my kiddos at our church’s children’s concert.  All the kids were able to dress like super heroes, and it was a fantastic way to kick off the summer.  The second goal was to use as many different papers from a bright Amy Tangerine 6×6 pad as I could.  Check out the video below:

To start my bright page, I grabbed my favorite set of metallic watercolors by Prima.  Not exactly a watercolor technique, but I used a water brush to plop color across the page, working in a loose rainbow pattern.  I finished off the watercoloring with black splatters.  This tied the black and white picture into the rest of the page, and my background was complete!

img_2307Sometimes mixing bright, bold patterned papers can be tricky.  The concept behind this page was to use small sections of the bold patterns.  I feel like the more patterns I used, the less any one pattern stood out.  Truthfully, I am not sure if a true art teacher would agree with my assessment, but to my eyes, it worked!  The more pattern on the page, the less pattern jumps off the page…makes sense, right?  I used a 1-inch circle punch to cut circles and then cut those in half to work with semi-circles.  I layered the semi-circles in kind of a flower pattern around the circular picture.  Then, I carried the same semi-circle motif to the other three corners of the paper.  Doing this helped your eye move around the page, and formed a frame for the whole layout!

I used two different stamp sets to finish off my page.  The first is a newer alpha stamp from Illustrated Faith.  Using the smallest acrylic block that I have, I carefully added the title “Super Summer” to the right side of the spread.  I curved it around the scallops that were formed from the semi-circle.  Then I grabbed a brand-new-to-me stamp set from Pink and Main and added a couple of adorable cameras and phrases.
